Cement Factory, Yes! Oil Refinery, No!

June 05, 2008 - P.D.M believes there is no better way to support World Environment Day than to call upon Government to completely abandon its foolish and short-sighted plan to impose the construction of an oil refinery upon the people of Dominica.

We say again that putting any such refinery here is bound to spoil our environment. It is bound to destroy our economic prospects as an eco-tourist destination. It is bound to interfere with our vision for the sustainable development of our country.

Furthermore, it is plain to see that putting it here will not bring the number of jobs dreamed of by Minister Austrie. It will not reduce the price of petrol at gas stations. And it will not drive down the escalating costs of electricity to consumers.

The P.D.M once more calls upon Government to take the money offered by Venezuelan President Chavez and invest it in the interest of Dominica rather than that of Venezuela. Invest it in a cement factory. A cement factory based on our own raw material will put an end to the plunder of our tarrish by Gadakan and the rest. It will create value added wealth and bring badly needed revenue to our country. It will provide jobs for the 30% of our workforce that is unemployed. It will lower the constantly rising cost of cement. It will boost the construction industry. And it will put an end to the regular shortage of cement here.
