PDM adds its congratulations to the governments and peoples of the People’s Republic of China and the Commonwealth of Dominica on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
These relations have to date been of benefit to both countries. We in Dominica have benefitted in terms of material support including the Sports Stadium, scholarships and the proposed reconstruction of the West Coast road from Roseau to Portsmouth. The People’s Republic of China has benefited from the political support coming from Dominica within the corridors of world power, including the United Nations.
Our hope is that these relations will be strengthened in the coming years. And we trust that they would continue to be guided by the principles of mutual respect and, most importantly, non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign States.
PDM hopes, as well, that our government will research and take note of the broad development experiences of the Chinese people, particularly the realities which have transformed China into a modern state and propelled that country to the forefront of world politics within the space of just 60 years, from 1949 to the present.
For us in P.D.M two main realities come to mind. One is that no country has been able to develop and provide an acceptable quality of life to its people on the basis of foreign control or unbridled, unchecked, unregulated foreign investment. The other is that the raw material for any country’s development are its people, its natural resources and the proper management of both for the common good.
We call on government to change course and be guided by these realities.
